"What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black?" -Margaret Burroughs
Real Men Charities is hosting a community discussion about raising healthy, successful, strong, compassionate young Black men. As we prepare to send them back to school what are the conversations we need to have with our sons to encourage purposeful social emotional and cultural development. We want to dive deep into the tough questions: how to help them survive encounters with the police that don't require them to cower? how do we cultivate young men that will be good partners to Black women in relationships? (in a world where that question is offensive) how do we teach about past and current traumas against Black folk that don't make white people seem so powerful? what skills do they need to be financially prosperous without building other people's institutions? how can they develop healthy languages of intimacy while respecting boundaries? which aspects of masculinity need to be discarded and which need to be protected? how can we help them find peace, purpose and joy in world that finds them so easily disposable?
We have assembled a brilliant panel of thinkers and workers who are all parents of Black boys. They will share from their personal and professional experiences. And there will be plenty of time to invite comments from the community. Join us.
