Opener: Gene Washington & The Sweet Sounds
Love songs and Oldies from Philly Soul pioneers The Delfonics, including the all-time classic “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time).”
The Delfonics kick off the 30th year of Music in the Park, a downtown musical institution, with an evening of soul and R&B classics. These Oldies are lush, soulful and intimately arranged. William “Poogie” Hart was primarily composer of all the Delfonics’ hits of the ’60s and ’70s. With Hart singing lead, the Delfonics hit it big with “La La Means I love You,” later featured in Spike Lee’s Crooklyn, Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown and sung by Nicolas Cage in “The Family Man.” 1970 single “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time) won the 1970 Grammy for best R&B Performance by a duo or group.
