• About this meeting: This is our third meeting on Frege's 'Begriffsschrift'. If general logic can be said to have a history in any significant sense after Aristotle, Frege's 'Begriffsschrift' (1879) marks the second event in that history. In his own words, regarding its significance, Frege writes: "If the task of philosophy is to break the domination of words over the human mind [...], then my concept script, being developed for these purposes, can be a useful instrument for philosophers [...] I believe the cause of logic has been advanced already by the invention of this concept notation." With this in mind, our task will be to understand Frege's 'Begriffsschrift' in Frege's terms as (a) an advance in logic, (b) as an organon, and (c) as containing substantive philosophical theses. There is no need to read in advance, as we will live read, discuss, and translate. Paul Grice, in the words of Frank Ramsey, suggests that much of the early work in this tradition “began life as a system of devices to combat wooliness” (in Plato’s beard) but can risk becoming “scholastic”, with appeal to only those with, what W. V. O. Quine calls, “a taste for desert landscapes”.
