When it comes to characteristics that set apart top leaders (whether political, corporate, social, celebrity, etc.), there’s often a magical, elusive trait behind their meteoric rise: charisma. Just don’t Google image search that word if you’re a non-binary person or a woman and don’t want to get a little depressed.
In the lexicon of leadership, there are many words to describe the traits we value and admire in those who lead. Unfortunately, not all of those words apply equally across genders. Men are rewarded for being bold, boisterous, and visible — for being charismatic. But what are the consequences for women and non-binary leaders who exhibit these same traits in the workplace? Is not being charismatic preventing us from holding top leadership positions? From getting us elected to public office?
At Work Redux | Charisma, we’ll explore the narrow band in which women and non-binary leaders are allowed to operate. We’ll hear from leaders often described as charismatic and from others who abandoned the male-centric ideal for qualities they’ve made uniquely their own. And most importantly, we'll begin crafting a new lexicon of leadership that is more inclusive, accessible, and rewards traits beyond the heteropatriarchy canon of success.

About Work Redux
As part of Pollen’s mission to invest in human connection, Work Redux is an event series (and now also a network of leaders) that inspires questions, sparks discussion, and drives action to challenge cultural assumptions behind the current, dominant work culture. We know the future of leadership must look gender-equal. But what microactions can we take to build and redesign the workplace to better support new points of view? Together, we will better understand how we can design and change the future of work as experienced and creative women step into leadership positions.

Work Redux | WORTH is presented by U.S. Bank, with support from the Bush Foundation and our partners at Machine Shop.
