UPDATE: Due to the recent government-wide lapse in appropriations, the 2019 ETW has been rescheduled for Tues-Wed, June 25-26. Thank you for your continued patience, flexibility, and understanding as we assess and revise the workshop's planning timeline.

The most up-to-date event details and changes may also be found on the ETW Homepage.

Pre-shutdown Registrants: If you registered before the ETW date was postponed from March to June, and you still wish to attend the ETW, you do not need to register again. Your original registration will be honored.

Registrant Cancellations: If you are no longer able to attend (due to the ETW being rescheduled), please email etw.logistics@noaa.gov to request that your registration be cancelled, or login to the registration system and cancel your registration yourself. We apologize for the inconvenience.

About the ETW: In an effort to promote a broader awareness of emerging technologies in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s observing system portfolio, the agency will host the Third NOAA Emerging Technologies Workshop at NCWCP in College Park, Maryland.

The workshop will include session devoted to technologies that are currently funded by NOAA, as well as session devoted to industry and academia. To capture the enormous breadth of NOAA observations, the workshop will bring together NOAA researchers, analysts, and practitioners of systems - both traditional and nontraditional; both remote sensing and in situ - across the following three topic areas:

  • Blue Economy: NOAA strives to strengthen the U.S. role in the Blue Economy by improving science-based management and sustainable use of ocean resources. To advance this goal, 2019 ETW sessions will explore technologies offering data insights that can support NOAA's sustainable development practices to generate economic growth and environmental stability and preservation.

  • Extreme Weather: NOAA strives to strengthen national resilience in the face of extreme weather events as a top priority. To advance this goal, 2019 ETW sessions will explore technologies offering observation capabilities and infrastructure that can enhance NOAA's understanding of weather variability, extreme events, and ecosystem processes.

  • Data Management and Analytics: NOAA is a science-based, data driven, organization. To advance this goal, 2019 ETW sessions will explore technologies, tools, and technique which advance data dissemination, discovery, and access, or which speed up or automate data processing and modeling.

The workshop will focus on showcasing - and possibly infusing - sensors, platforms and capabilities that could replace or improve NOAA's current capabilities, lower costs, and fill current gaps within the next 3 to 5 years. In a series of ten-minute presentations, the workshop will highlight the key research, collaborations, projects, and efforts within NOAA’s community of emerging technologies.

Workshop Registration

  • All attendees of the 2019 NOAA ETW must register in order to attend the event.

  • The workshop will be held at NCWCP, the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction, a Federal Government-owned facility with a security detail. On-site registrations, walk-ins, and foreign nationals will not be granted access.

  • The Deadline for Registration is (TBD)

  • Registration is FREE; however, the ETW can offer no funding for travel to the workshop. No food or beverage will be offered to participant. Registered participants will have the option of ordering a boxed lunch from the NCWCP cafeteria (for either or both days), or may take lunch off-site (90 minute window). All boxed lunches must be pre-ordered and paid for in advance by the participant.

  • NOAA employees who must travel to attend the workshop (flying, or driving 50+ miles) are responsible for getting travel funding approved by their respective Line Office, and for submitting their name for the NOAA Group Travel Request. This step may be done after you register, but should be done as soon after you register as possible.

  • For this workshop, in order to be eligible for any travel funding from NOAA whatsoever, you must be a NOAA federal government employee. NOAA contractors, and all non-NOAA attendees, including non-NOAA guest speakers, are completely responsible for the entirety of their own travel funding and booking arrangements.

Projected Workshop Outcomes

The NOAA Emerging Technologies Workshop will advance NOAA's mission by allowing us to:

  • Better understand emerging technologies and capabilities;

  • Consider how these might meet NOAA observation requirements and impact NOAA programs; and,

  • Promote collaboration between NOAA Strategy Councils

Workshop Structure and Goals

Plenary sessions will be grouped according to the following themes: Blue Economy, Severe Weather, and Data Management & Analytics.

  • Each session will be approximately 80-90 minutes long, and will feature several 10-minute presentations, with each presentation spotlighting a different observing system capability.

  • It is the aim of the organizers to capture the breadth of NOAA within each domain, with a balanced of both remotely sensed and in situ systems.

  • There will be a focus on technologies that NOAA would consider incorporating in the Fiscal Year 2021-2025 time-frame.

  • There will be a focus on technologies that could replace and/or improve current capabilities, lower costs, fill current gaps, and/or could enhance the balance in the existing observation portfolio.

  • The workshop will include a techincal/scientific poster session, which will provide additional information on many of the featured emerging technologies, as well as many others of high interest.
