The ACAP Industry and Alumni team are very excited to have Jude Czerenkowski and Simone Russell from the Stroke Foundation present at the Melbourne Campus & via webinar to highlight National Stroke Week. They will discuss the impact Stroke has on the mental health & wellbeing of the survivor and family.

Stroke is one of Australia's biggest killers, with 65% of survivors suffering a disability which impedes their ability to carry out daily living activities unassisted.

Stroke happens in an instant.

Most survivors and families have little understanding of stroke, and no experience of living with disability.

This thought provoking and insightful presentation will cover 6 key components:

  1. Stroke causes, types, diagnosis and treatment - A basic intro into Stroke
  2. Stroke impacts & rehabilitation - Knowledge & Understanding; how Stroke impacts people, how rehabilitation is delivered, the part neuroplasticity plays and how much recovery can people expect
  3. Depression & anxiety - Knowledge about mood disorders after Stroke; how common is depression and anxiety for both survivors and family members, what factors are associated with increased risk, are Stroke patients screened for mood disorders and what treatment pathways are there, how do depression and anxiety impact recovery and what's known about effective treatment.
  4. Grief & loss - Knowledge of the lived experience of grief & acceptance after Stroke; how do survivors and families experience the losses associated with Stroke and how do people balance hope and acceptance?
  5. Social support - An understanding of both the limits and benefits; what are the barriers and enablers of social support, what strategies do survivors and families use to engage the support of people around them, how do survivors and families grieve lost relationships and connections and how does peer support help and how do people access it?
  6. Recovery and the 'new normal' - the lived experience of the remaking of self, home and engagement with the world; how do survivors describe their 'new normal' and their pathways there and what support does StrokeLine provide and what practices do we use?
