A second opportunity to visit part of Edinburgh's secret, underground history. Although built at great expense in the early 1950's this unique facility was a complete secret until the early 80's! Barnton Quarry bunker is actually two bunkers: The WW2 era RAF sector control bunker for Central Scotland which became the RAF Caledonian Sector Operations Centre for long range bomber detection and fighter intercept control during the early Cold War; and a Cold War Regional Seat of Government from where Scotland would be administered should the unthinkable have happened. This event is a rare opportunity for the public to enter the normally closed gates and visit the WW2 era bunker and the famous tunnel.
Mid way through their extensive clearing and restoration of this fascinating building into a Cold War Museum the Barnton Quarry Restoration Project invite you to come and view their project and learn about the Past, Present and the Future of one of Edinburgh's greatest secrets.
Please note that we can only give access to the same areas as last year, namely the WW2 surface bunker and our famous tunnel. The deep underground bunker is a building site and so we can't let you in there just yet! There will be plenty of photos and info about both bunkers so this is sure to be a fascinating visit.
This event will be extremely popular and so we've set up FREE tickets to help us to manage numbers and ensure that you get the best from your visit. Please ensure that you 'buy' a ticket for each of the adults in your party. Up to two children under 16 can come along with each adult.
FAQs
What has changed since last time?
While we've certainly been busy since last year, most of the work has taken place behind the scenes and so you will not see much difference if you were lucky enough to get a ticket last year! This Doors Open event is primarily aimed at new visitors who have yet to experience the Bunker.
Are there toilet facilities?
As the site is still a building site there will be no toilet facilities.
Do I need to wear boots and a hard hat?!
No! We've made the site safe but reccommend that you wear sensible footwear.
Is the building wheelchair accessible?
Due to the construction of the building only some of the facility will be accessible to wheelchair users. The main Operations Well is accessible via a few steep steps. The tunnel is wheelchair accessible but is a steep slope. Our stewards will be delighted to help push you back up the slope however!
Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?
We ask that all under 16's are accompanied by an adult.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
We have very limited onsite parking which will be strictly limited to blue badge holders. However there are excellent bus services: the Lothian Buses service 21 and Skylink 200 stop at the end of our driveway and the Number 1 and Number 26 terminate within a 5 minute walk of the bunker.
What is your pet policy?
Well behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times.
Can I take photos?
Of course! You're welcome to bring a camera but no tripods please as they tend to get in the way of other visitor
