Bypassing and Navigating Anxiety and Depression in Adolescence

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION:
The mental health of adolescents is crucial and increasingly a concern for many. We need to know more… for our kids and ourselves. Hear from experts in the field of diagnosing and treating adolescents through the last 20 years and learn how we are seeing the lack of prevention in the area of mental health and how it leads to the epidemic of substance use, severe anxiety disorders, suicide and violence. Gals on the Go Project in affiliation with Your Choice to Live bring prevention to the forefront of the mental health crisis in our community.

For questions about this event, please contact Ben Westphal at westphab@elmbrookschools.org or a Gals on the Go Project representative at galsonthegoproject@gmail.com

WHY ATTEND THIS PRESENTATION:
We are seeing an increase in anxiety kids and when early symptoms are not identified which can lead to a level that can affect kids in many ways in school and at home. Parents will learn about how anxiety manifests, what it looks like and how it can overlap with other mental health concerns. The presentation will share how the brain works and how the brain's neural pathways are similar between anxiety and substance abuse, self harm and eating disorders. The process of building resilience is the ability to utilize our fundamental skills taught in home, the development of personal competence, and the ability to confront adversity.

With our dependance on social media and technology as a society, kids have more access to information online than ever before. This presentation will address these issues as well as give practical advice on how to instill resilience building tools starting in the home. Resilience is something that can be taught and nurtured in young people. Most experts agree the building of a resilience starts at an early age. However there is a lot that can be done during later childhood, adolescence, and adulthood to promote resilience in an individual. Research shows that resilient kids come from resilient parents. This presentation will help empower parents to make changes and to build the foundation of emotional and social health in the home.

We will share a powerful personal testimony about recovery that will offer a message of hope. Sharing a journey of resiliency and the necessity of a healthy family unit, a stable support network and how to heal trauma to be able to share a story of courage, healing and hope.
